Homebush Victorious in Errea Cup Final PDF Print E-mail

At Seymour Shaw Stadium on Thursday August 27 Homebush Boys High played resolute football to score a solid 2‐0 win over Warners Bay High in the final of the statewide knockout competition. More than 250 schools have now comedown to one, Homebush.

The members of the squad are: Travis Lavdaras, Daniel Gabrielli, Rustam Mia, Kook Bo Stone, Imran Maarabani, Ben Green, Scott Mackay, David von Dinklage[c], Mitchell Davidson, Roberto Speranza, Tariq Atchan, Eren Demiroz, Thomas Burton, Andrew Depta, Jack Avery and Steven Gabor.

The next match is on Thursday 10 September against Hills Sports High in the All Schools Football Challenge

In a display of tight, close marking, attacking football Homebush dominated the match for the first fifteen minutes of each half, opening the scoring in the seventh minute through Jack Avery and adding the second after 30 seconds of the second half through Steven Gabor. However, Warners Bay refused to concede defeat and the Homebush defence found itself hard pressed to hold out against quick breaks and long balls.

Homebush did not try to close the match down and also threatened the Warners Bay goal on many occasions. As it happened there was to be no addition to the score mainly through the efforts of the goalkeepers. Travis Lavdaras of Homebush in a man of the match performance pulled off three outstanding saves while James Maierhoffer of Warners Bay was always well positioned to intercept Homebush attacks.

The well drilled Homebush team held out for a well deserved victory mainly due to the efforts of Roberto Speranza in defence, David von Dinklage (voted player of the finals series) and Mitchell Davidson (grandson of cricket legend, Alan Davidson) in midfield and Steven Gabor and Jack Avery up front. Overall this match and all matches throughout the five months of the Errea Cup campaign was based on emphasizing playing as a team and supporting each other.

Results were: Manly (a) 7‐2; Killarney Heights (a) 3‐0; Hunters Hill (a) 8‐1; Davidson (h) 6‐0; Armidale (a) 4‐0; Swansea (h) 7‐0; Kingsgrove 8‐0.
