EXCELLENCE FUND 2009
Written by Tom Pinkey

This is the twenty second successive year that Homebush/Strathfield R.S.L. Sub-branch has supported the schools Excellence Fund. The Fund was initiated by members of the Homebush/Strathfield R.S.L. Sub-branch in 1987. For the last seven years Wests Ashfield have become joint sponsors of the fund.

The Fund has assisted students to participate in a wide range of cultural, academic, creative and sporting activities. In many cases without grants from this Fund many students would not have been able to participate in activities that highlighted their special talents. The first recipients for 2009 were 34 students who have been subsidised to participate in the NSW Maths Challenge.

A list of recipients for 2007 and 2008 can be found on the school website under Communities – Excellence Fund. All students who have been chosen in any Gifted and Talented program can gain funding by talking to the Principal, Deputy Principal Bill Hilliard or Excellence Fund Coordinator Tom Pinkey.

YEAR 12 STUDY SKILLS MORNING
Written by Tom Pinkey

The Study Skills season is well underway, with one of the highlights being the Year 12 workshops. A group of 2008 HSC students came back to school to lead groups of current students, taking them through their recent study experiences – the highs, the lows, and their perspectives on how to best prepare for the challenges of the final year of schooling.

Year 12 2008 with Study Skills Coordinator Caitlin Dwyer and Principal Dr. Ian Paterson following their Study Skill Sessions

Topics discussed included the importance of setting goals and being organised; how to stay motivated; and balancing sport, hobbies and study. A clear theme was the real significance of working consistently throughout the HSC year – school assessments are very important! Some of the most motivational comments related to what to do when you get a disappointing mark for an assessment – rather than focussing on the mark itself, finding out how to improve it was the key!

We were very fortunate to have such a diverse and inspirational group of leaders - some very academic, some musical, some sporty, all with valuable insights into the demands of the HSC. Our current Year 12 students have benefited from hearing such a wide range of perspectives. With great appreciation to:

Peter Ayre, Andrew Brimfield, Eli Chan, Li Yuan Chen, Samuel Che, Sid Dixit, Afnan Fazli, Ellison Furneaux-Bate, Joseph Giannone, Joshua Ho, Ibrahim Kerem, Kenny Lloyd, Jing Shun Ma, Steuart McAllister, Emre Mehmet, Hao Ni, Ronald Pai, James Shute, James Sun, Kaan Sozen, Alan Tran, Duncan Trinh , Parth Upadhyay

2008/9 VAMPIRE SHIELD
Written by Tom Pinkey
The annual Vampire Shield Competition is a key component of the Australian Red Cross Youth Donor Program and is designed to inspire a little healthy competition between local schools as well as to formally recognise students for their commitment to help saving lives. The competition runs between July 1 and June 30 each year. Donation tallies are recorded daily. At present Homebush Boys' High is running third on the table. Parents and students can make their donation count by advising reception, at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service in Parramatta, to record your donation against Homebush' Boys High's tally.

Each year just prior to Year 12 sitting their HSC  students volunteer to donate blood over a two day period. In 2008 the days were coordinated by Deputy Principal Bill Hilliard with a number of staff also volunteering to be part of the programme.
