Written by Tom Pinkey

This report was written by Ms Gyan Sahay Public Speaking Coordinator.

The 5th Annual John Symond All Boys Public Speaking Competition was held in School Hall on Thursday 2nd April. This event created a lot of hype for the 22 contestants and hundreds of students who were lucky enough to have English in the morning and their teachers were willing to bring them to witness this major Annual event.

Principal Dr. Ian Paterson and Public Speaking Coordinator Ms. Gyan Sahay with Prize Winners

Once again the Adjudicator was very impressed with the quality and the different angles the contestants took towards interpreting the topics. This, in fact become one of the discriminators which helped determine the outcome. Congratulations to the following students who won both cash prizes and a trophy. Special thanks to Sam Hayward & Patrick Gallagher for sharing the role of Chairperson and Erkan Atun for being the timekeeper.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr John Symond for his generous sponsorship which helped pay for the gourmet pizza, the cash prizes and the Adjudicator’s fees. Thanks to Mr Hilliard for dipping into the Excellence Funds which covered for the payment of the trophies.

Year 11 Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) day
Written by Tom Pinkey
For the second year in a row Rotary has sponsored this very important program for our Year 11 students. John Sculthorpe Head Teacher PD/Health/PE coordinated the day and has written the following report. Photographs of the day taken by Tim Jurd Deputy Principal Curriculum.

On Tuesday the 17th March 2009, 190 of our year 11 students attended a driver awareness day conducted by the Rotary Club of Concord. The day proved to be a great success as they were involved in a series of presentations and workshops surrounding the core issue of safe driving. This counted towards 30% of their Crossroads curriculum, which looks at issues such as road education.

Different Conditions Affect Our Driving

Deputy Principal with Rotary Club of Concord Volunteers

The day was pertinent for these boys as it is at this developmental and social stage that our students begin to get their drivers licenses and/ or become passengers in beginning drivers’ cars. Statistics show that the amount of injuries and fatalities on the road are still made up of younger drivers, so it is days like this that aim to reduce the risk involved with the driving of vehicles by our youth.
