Homebush Boys Year 12 students recently attended the Inner West Tertiary and Career Expo at MLC Burwood. The Expo is a result of cooperation of Career Advisers from State, Catholic and Independent schools. Over thirty schools and three thousand students attended the day. The Expo was started twelve years ago to give students the chance to research their future career pathways by gaining first hand knowledge from universities, TAFE, Private Providers and large organisations or groups who employ young people.
Student Prefects who acted as volunteers to set up the Expo with their sponsor The University of Notre Dame
The Expo has grown over the years and has become succesful in attracting a large number of organisations. Fourty-four Private Providers were on hand to give advice on courses from animation, accountancy, business, graphic design, marketing, music, real estate, theatre and events to web design and more. The three major metropolitan TAFE's were not only able to provide general information on courses but give thorough advice to students on the specialty courses that each Institute offers. All the universities in New South Wales and ACT were joined by the interstate universities of Bond (QLD) and Monash (VIC) and overseas universities from Vancouver, Toronto and Otago. Photographs of the students can be viewed by clicking here or going to the Gallery on this website
In the spirit of generosity and volunteerism two hundred and two senior Homebush Boys High students participated in the annual Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. The boys formed the majority of collectors for the Homebush and Strathfield local area and assisted in raising a record $24,000 for the charity.
Coordinator Peter Smith said: “The $24,000 is a record for the area eclipsing the $22,500 for last year.In these tighter economic times this was a terrific effort.”
A recent grant from Wests Ashfield of $1,000 has enabled a number of gifted and talented students to participate in a number of diverse activities from mathematics competitions, music and science programs and various areas of sport. A list of up to date recipients is available in the Communities Section of the website underExcellence Fund

The students of Homebush Boys High School experienced a fantastic motivational opportunity when the Australian Test Cricket Vice-Captain, Michael Clarke visited the school.

Michael Clarke visited the school, on behalf of his sponsor Slazenger, to present a signed cricket bat to year 8 student, Bavi Indrakumar. Bavi won the bat in a Slazenger promotion organized by Kevin Pillay.
School Captain, Thomas Stefoulis, Tyson Parcell and Kabilan Bascaran interviewed Clarke about his cricketing career and public profile. Clarke enthralled the assembly with his answers which traced the highs of a 155 run debut to the low of being dropped from the Test Team. He emphasized the hard work and discipline necessary to win back his position and the vice-captaincy of the team. He spoke of the costs of being a celebrity, but then emphasized how satisfied he was with his professional and private life. Clarke declared facing Brett Lee, in the nets, the most intimidating situation in cricket. He added, he looked forward to joining former Homebush Boys student Phillip Hughes, on the forthcoming ‘Ashes’ tour.
Tyson Parcell then presented Clarke with a gift and thanked him for his honesty and inspiration.
An added bonus for the school was when Michael Clarke kindly took time out to sign a cricket bat which will be used by the Prefects to raise funds, to help continue the sponsorship of 13 Ugandan students in 2009/10. These students were first sponsored by the Prefects of 2008. Click Here to see earlier report on this website.
The 67th Annual Athletic Carnival was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre on Friday 1st May. As for the Swimming Carnival, the school Athletics Carnival acts as the platform for entries to the North West Metropolitan Zone AthleticsCarnival to be held at SOPAC on June 11th.
Vaughan Supporters Cheering their athletes on to Victory
In August 2008 the Homebush Boys Prefects launched the Kawempe Homecare Website which one of the prefects Kaan Sozen built. The Prefects were so moved by the project that they decided to do a fund raiser and together with support of the Rotary Clubs of Concord and Silverwater were able to provide education for thirteen students for a year. Recently the 2009 School Captain, Thomas Stefoulis and Career Adviser, Tom Pinkey received an email from Dr. Sam Guma the Executive Medical Director of Kawempe with a report on how the students were progressing.

The 2009 Prefects will be working with Rotary Clubs later this term to fundraise to not only continue sponsoring these students but hopefully add another one or two from the waiting list. To find out more about the Education Support Program at Kawempe click here. Read a half yearly report on each of the individual students sponsored.
