Oxfam Trailwalker is the world's greatest team challenge. And it's also one of the toughest. The challenge is to get your team of four across 100km of Australian bush in less than 48 hours - and, collectively, to raise at least $1,000 to help to overcome poverty and suffering around the world. Ryan Chadwick and Ramana Kirubagaran our two tireless IT Support Staff have joined forces with two friends from university to take up the challenge. Each team must commit to raising at least $1,000 to support Oxfam's work in 26 countries including Indigenous Australia. Oxfam Australia makes a tremendous difference to people's lives.

The recent fund raising efforts, by the school prefects was successful in raising enough funds not only to continue to support the thirteen Ugandan students sponsored by the 2008 Prefects to attend school for another year but also to add another two students. Thomas Stefoulis, School Captain, stated that this was a tremendous result that was only possible because it was supported by the whole school community. With the assistance of the Rotary Club of Burwood (through their ‘Monster Raffle') Homebush Boys managed to raise $3,625.

Every year in Visual Arts the art teachers look at selecting students work for the annual Operation Art Exhibition for Westmead Children’s Hospital. There was some excellent artwork done by all students which always makes it a difficult exercise in choosing which artwork to send in. For this year Yr 8 students Henry Liang, Anthony Phan, Edwin Guo and Joseph Zheng had their artwork selected for the annual exhibition which is held at Penrith Regional Art Gallery. The artwork will be returned to the school later this term with the possibility that some of the boy’s artworks may be selected for the permanent exhibition at either Westmead Children’s hospital or at regional hospital.
Head Teacher Creative Arts Kim Attwood was extremely pleased with the success of Visual Arts students Peter Kumar, Ercan Altan and Varun Bapat from Yr 10 and Rulin Huong and Victor Le from Yr 9 who attended Campbelltown Arts Centre for the annual Artsmart workshop. The students were involved in the painting and digital media workshops over the four days working alongside practicing artists in the studio space at the gallery. The students produced some excellent artwork which was exhibited at the gallery at the conclusion of the workshop. The students were also successful in having their artwork chosen for the prestigious ‘Director’s Choice’ exhibition that will be held in October at Homebush Olympic centre.
Year 7 were involved in a really entertaining program on African Music on Thursday 6th August in the school hall. Organised by music teacher Andrew Smith, Eddie Quansah spent over an hour introducing students to African musical instruments and singing. The enjoyable part for students is that were actively involved either by participating from the hall floor or assisting Eddie on stage.
Eddie and Year 7 studentsdrumming up a storm for their audience
Eddie a native of Ghana has been performing in schools for students for over twenty years and has given sessions all over Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Ghana. A real entertainer Eddie introduced the students to a wide range of African musical instruments. The Talking Drum and the 'Ton Ton From' drums were very popular as was evident from the number of volunteers to have a drumming session on stage. Eddie's hands were a blur as he played the African Xylophone which is made from the teak tree and gourds. Laughlin Nelson found that playing the Kalimba, which is known in African as the Thumb Piano', is not as easy as Eddie made it seem. The Shakus was an instrument that as its name suggests you shake it is a gourd with seeds attached to the outside. The only wind instrument on display was a flute, the Aloke. Year 7 spent a fun filled hour as active participants and photographs of the session can be seen in the Gallerysection of the Homebush website.
